Kayaking at Drake’s Estero, CA

Kayaking is one of the best ways to get out into nature and up close to wildlife. In addition, many of the world’s destinations best suited for kayaking are also among the most picturesque. So if you are either a serious kayaker or a serious photographer, it’s very likely that at some point you will combine the two. Taking photos while kayaking comes with a particular set of challenges. These include:

  • Water – This is the most obvious danger to pricey photography equipment. Fresh water is bad enough, but a lot of the best pictures are taken while surrounded by corrosive salt water. Fortunately, there are many ways to protect your camera gear.
  • Impact -Kayaking involves a lot of motion, and your fragile photography gear may be subject to damage if it’s rattling around in your kayak.
  • Stupid tilted frame! -Kayaks are constantly bobbing and swaying in the water, and it’s pretty difficult at times to shoot a level frame. If the frame is tilted too much, you might have to crop out essential pixels just to straighten it.

She’s got blisters on her fingers! Well, it’s the last few shopping days before Christmas 2009, so get ready for all the great things that come with the season: the end-of-year work crunch at your BDJ, daily trips to the airport, and of course, circling for hours looking for a parking spot at the mall when all you want is to [...]

Snow Kayaking

Where have I been? I just found out about this crazy sport. Looks FAST.

Someone in the comments did mention that in some of the shots, he is wearing a PFD. Seems like he should be wearing an Avalung instead.

Kiliii Dreaming Photo Blog

Kiliii Dreaming – Ancestral Ways Photography
Here’s a photoblog I came across that includes many photos of handmade wooden, skin-on-frame kayaks. The photographer apparently teaches classes about ancestral lifestyles, including survival and hunting and fishing methods. Sometimes I forget how beautiful the Pacific Northwest is, but looking at sites like this reminds me in [...]
