Kayaks

There are those who claim that the kayak is the most essential piece of equipment for those who wish to go kayaking. Yes, it is allegedly even more important than the paddle. Maybe even more important than the paddler? OK, maybe not.

Kayaks at Toronto Waterfront

Kayaks at Toronto Waterfront

The word “kayak” is an English-friendly spelling of “qajaq”, the Greenlander’s term for a skin-on-frame boat. Here is a recording of the original pronunciation of qayaq. The word “kayak” today usually refers to any of a class of slender boats, which typically have pointed bows and sterns, closed decks, and seat no more than three people. However, there are “kayaks” that have removable decks and “kayaks” that seat more than three people. So I have always found the definition to be a bit hazy.

Modern kayaks are very different than the original kayaks from 4,000 years ago. Kayaks today are highly engineered, efficiently produced, and come loaded with conveniences and innovations. Some kayaks are hand made works of art, polished and refined over hundreds of hours. Others are cast in a mold and completed in a fraction of the time. Whatever the case may be, each kayak is designed to address a particular set of needs.

Qayak – Q is for Questionable Quality?

There was a time when I was really intrigued by this inflatable kayak. It seemed like a nice quick-and-dirty way to get on the water without a lot of fuss. And by quick-and dirty, I mean cheap. In this case, cheap means $214.00 for a single kayak and $279.00 for a double [...]

Folbot Loves Me – Folding Kayaks on Sale for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Sale on Greenland II & Cooper.
Folbot loves me. And not just because I have about $4000 worth of kayaks from them. I know because they sent me an email, direct to my inbox, full of pictures of candy hearts. The aforementioned email also said (and this is a direct quote), “I [...]

Trak kayak T1600 – folding kayak assembly video

It’s very nice that Trak kayaks has their own Youtube channel, and it’s a great way for them to market their boats. I, for one, appreciate seeing how any folding kayak is assembled, although maybe I will look for one where the assembly is not sped up as it is in this video. [...]

Folbot Folding Kayaks On Sale Again – Cyber Monday Redux

Hmmmmm… Were too many kayak buyers indecisive and waited too long, or didn’t hear about the sale in time in the first place? Well, for whatever reason, Folbot is reduxing (I just made up a new word) their cyber monday deal of 20% off everything except 10% off the citibot. I’ve never seen [...]

Kayak Noise Blog – Designing Necky Kayaks, Ocean Kayaks, & Old Town Canoes

Kayak Noise.
Kayak Noise is a blog that presents the unique perspective of a kayak designer. It is what I imagine to be a rare source of information about the kayak design process. I particularly like all the drawings and sketches. Lots of great action shots too!
Not only is Spike an experienced kayaker, [...]

If you are planning to buy a Folbot, don’t forget that their Cyber Monday sale is ending at midnight on Monday, November 30.

20% is the biggest discount you can reasonably expect to get on a Folbot folding kayak, based on the past several years of sale history. They typically have a sale at least [...]

Clear Blue Hawaii Transparent Folding Kayak

If you haven’t seen this before, it sounds pretty awesome:
http://www.clearbluehawaii.com/products/boats/napali.html
I haven’t seen a lot of reviews on this particular kayak – could it be that no one can stomach the $6,320 price tag? To put that in perspective, you could buy 5.28 Folbot Citibot folding kayaks, or 15.80 Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame Inflatable Kayaks, or [...]
